RAMALLAH, Friday, March 20, 2020 (WAFA) – A number of Palestinian political prisoners at the Israeli prison of Megiddo have been placed under precautionary quarantine against novel COVID-19 (coronavirus), today said the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission.

The Commission confirmed that no cases of COVID-19 were reported among the Palestinian detainees in Israel – with 705 cases reported in Israel so far – but the said prisoners were quarantined after they were moved outside the prison either for trial or for other reasons and were returned later.

It called on the Israeli authorities to ensure all preventive measures including the provision of personal hygiene items and disinfectants to the prisoners to protect them against the pandemic.

There are some 5,000 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails for resisting the Israeli occupation of their homeland. Dozens of prisoners in Israeli detention have died over the years as a direct or indirect result of medical negligence by the prison authorities.
